As of Friday, November 19, according to the ordinance of the City of Vienna, the “recovered/vaccinted plus PCR” rule applies to events with 25 or more people. This means that even if you are fully immunized by a double vaccination, even if you have already received the third shot, or if you are recovered, you must also present a valid PCR test when attending any of Vienna State Opera performances.

This test must not be more than 48 hours old and must be valid until the end of the performance. The date and time of the test is valid, not the result. Furthermore, as of Friday, FFP2 masks must be worn throughout the building, including during the performance.

Starting tomorrow, November 19, Vienna State Opera visitors will need the following proofs or documents at the entrance

  • A valid admission ticket, personalized in visitor name
  • A proof of 2G (vaccinated, convalescent)
  • A negative PCR test, not older than 48 hours. The date and time of the test, as well as the end of the show, are required
  • An official photo ID

Due to the 2G plus rule, there is no mask requirement. However, by wearing a mask, you are contributing to the safety of everyone present.

Currently, one hears and reads again and again that, especially outside Vienna, PCR test results are delivered very late due to the high number of tests and the resulting overload of the laboratories. For these cases, the regulation provides an exception, so that you do not have to miss the presentation despite late results:

If you have submitted a PCR test in a timely manner and the result is delayed, proof of PCR test submission (e.g., mail, confirmation) as well as an antigen test, not older than 24 hours in combination with above documents is also considered admission. In this case, however, you are obliged to wear an FFP2 mask during the entire performance.

If you have been vaccinated with a vaccine that is not licensed in Austria  the proof of neutralizing antibodies is no longer valid

If any of the visitors do not have access to any of the testing options listed above, there is a possibility to testing a fee-based testing facility in Operngasse, directly next to the Vienna State Opera. This test container will offer PCR testing at a special price for visitors of the Vienna State Opera. This is open from Monday-Sunday in the time from 09.00-19.00 (last test at 17.00).

The presentation of a valid ticket is required. A test the day before for the next day (drop off 09.00-17.00) costs 30€, a test on the same day (drop off 09.00-10.30) costs 40€. In both cases, the result will be available on the day of the performance at 17.30 at the latest.

Covid-19 measures since November 8: The “Recovered/Vaccinated” regulation will still apply at the Vienna State Opera, but since November 8, proof of neutralizing antibodies will no longer be valid as proof of being recovered form Covid. Please note that if you have been vaccinated with a vaccine that is not licensed in Austria (licensed are: BioNTech/Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson), the proof of neutralizing antibodies is no longer valid. The second vaccination is only valid for 9 months from 6 December.
