At the heart of the Grand Kyiv Ballet are Kateryna Kukhar and Oleksandr Stoianov, two remarkable individuals whose stories resonate on and off the stage. Kateryna, a distinguished artist and People’s Artist of Ukraine, has had an illustrious career at the renowned National Opera of Ukraine. Her versatility and exceptional technique have garnered international acclaim, captivating audiences with performances that resonate on a profound emotional level.
Oleksandr Stoianov, the Principal Dancer of the National Opera of Ukraine, serves as the Artistic Director of the “Grand Kyiv Ballet.” In 2014, amidst the turmoil of war in Ukraine, Stoianov formed the company with the vision of reigniting the Ukrainian ballet scene. Despite the challenges posed by the conflict, Stoianov and his fellow artists remain committed to their art, bringing the beauty of Ukrainian ballet to audiences worldwide.
The couple, now calling Seattle their temporary home, undertook extraordinary efforts to ensure their children’s safety during the conflict. With the assistance of friends, they tirelessly worked to evacuate their children from Ukraine. Regrettably, not all their relatives could be relocated to a fully secure location, as Kateryna’s parents bravely chose to remain in Kyiv, demonstrating unwavering strength in the face of adversity.
