Milano Dance Competition, a continuous point of reference for dancers and choreographers, but also a creative laboratory

The “Milano Dance Competition” International Competition was born in 2017 from a project promoted and organized by the RossoLab Association, in the persons of Mirella Rosso, Michele Olivieri and Milena Rosso for Emmetre Eventi, which sets the main objective of the event.

The first editions took place at the historic Milanese club “Zelig”, born in 1986 and famous for having launched numerous artists, giving life to the highly successful TV show of the same name, “Milano Dance Competition” proved to be a workshop of future talents and the particular intimacy of the venue allowed each edition to experience close-up emotions.

Among its judges, the Competition has always counted prestigious names in classical and contemporary dance, without neglecting other styles and disciplines. The various prizes up for grabs in the first editions also provided the opportunity for the best choreographer to participate in the choreographic review # 140 Danza d’Autore in Milan: a thematic network and aggregator created to support and disseminate the international choreographic offer.

Many famous names go on stage alongside the winners of the Competition for experimental evenings in the dance field with the sole purpose of enhancing the dancers and in particular the choreographers, allowing them to express their creative and aesthetic vision, as well as to provide the incisive possibility of developing ideas and projects to spread the choreographic offer, demonstrating on the one hand how the nature of the “Milano Dance Competition” continues to be varied, open, sensitive to change, renewal and experimentation, and from on the other hand, above all by certifying how much their intentions continue to be at a high level.

For “Emmetre Eventi” this competition is not only a continuous point of reference for new dancers and choreographers, but also a sort of “creative laboratory” aimed at developing practices, contamination of languages and synergies within the international panorama, thus becoming a platform and a stepping stone. In 2021, given the impossibility of performing in presence, the organization decided to continue to carry out the competition using the online mode, allowing many students, schools, directors and choreographers to compare themselves from each of their Nation without having to incur additional travel costs beyond compliance with health protocols. The idea was successful with hundreds of students who sent videos from France, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain, Romania, Austria, Spain, Belgium, Russia, United States of America, and of course more from Italy bringing the world of dance closer to the city of Milan in one big breath.

Numerous motivated, gritty and energetic young dancers proposed an ensemble full of solos, twos and group pieces taken from the most famous ballets in the repertoire, as well as steps, figures and movements alternating with the fluidity and plasticity of modern disciplines.

The best students, who have distinguished themselves for their ability and technique, virtually reached the podium with a specific goal forged to growth, also receiving special awards and prestigious scholarships. The result was an explosive mixture of growing expressiveness and personality, confirming the objective of the event which has always been the key to its success, together with the vocation to offer a significant moment of encounter-confrontation between choreographers, teachers, dancers, students and enthusiasts, who were able to express themselves underlining the different experiences, cultures and stylistic dictionaries from which to draw inspiration to offer a real moment of aggregation.
