This year’s festival takes place from June 24th to July 10th, 2022 enjoying people with operas, concerts, ballets, recitals, plays, along with film festivals, workshops, conferences, meetings, awards, competitions, special events and also contemporary art.

Founded by composer Gian Carlo Menotti in 1958, it is called “Two Worlds Festival” because of the intention of having the American and European cultures meet each other. This concept has been strengthened by the fact that it inspired the Spoleto Festival USA, held annually in Charleston, South Carolina.

Germaine Acogny – “mother of contemporary African dance” and Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2021 – will open the dance section of the 65th Spoleto Festival, with her reinterpretation of the famous “Sacre du printemps” by Pina Bausch, played for the first time by a company of African dancers. “Le Sacre” is staged, from 24 to 27 June at the Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti, in a two-part program that includes “common ground [s]”, a new work conceived, interpreted by Acogny together with Malou Airaudo, icon of Tanztheater Wuppertal and principal interpreter in many of Pina Bausch’s early works. The show is produced by the Pina Bausch Foundation, École des Sables and Sadler’s Wells, the “Festival dei Due Mondi” is among the co-producers.

The programming of Spoleto 65 collects some of the most interesting proposals of the new generation of international choreographers and choreographers, capable of questioning their own language through the exchange with different disciplines, attracted by the search for the limit in its creative potential, by delving into experience personal and in the freedom of one’s perceptions.

The Belgian choreographer Alexander Vantournhout, founder of the “not standing” company and trained by studying juggling and contemporary dance, brings to the stage “Through the Grapevine” (25-26 June, Roman Theater) eccentric pas-de-deux in which he challenges Axel Guérin to maintain constant physical contact, bringing the dialectic between touching and being touched to the center of the performance.

Contemporary circus and dance intertwine in “Tentative approaches to a point of suspension” (2-3 July, San Nicolò, Meeting Point, Church of Sant’Agata), a series of five performances by Yoann Bourgeois, an exceptional French acrobat. Bourgeois wants to make the apogee point perceptible, that absolute present of infinite potential in which dance is in balance between control and fall, and to do so he uses trampolines and devices that amplify physical phenomena.

Argentine choreographer Ayelen Parolin presents “Weg” (1-3 July, Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti), a dizzying exercise inspired by the dynamics of collective movements, a disruptive and experimental choreographic action, deliberately plural and extravagant, which explores the notion of pleasure, of inner melody that leads to movement.

Artistic Director Monique Veaute
The sixty-fifth edition of the Festival dei Due Mondi hosts the best international performing experiences, enhancing theaters, open spaces and unconventional places, of which Spoleto offers a unique concentration in Italy: more than 60 shows in 17 days and over 500 artists from 36 countries. For the second year the Festival follows its multidisciplinary and international vocation with an artistic proposal across the individual arts that develops around three programmatic lines: music of the two Worlds, the voice of women and new ways of telling music. Looking forward to meet you in Spoleto.

With Toná (8-10 July, Auditorium della Stella) Luz Arcas – choreographer and founder dancer of the company “La Phármaco” – presents one of the most introspective works of her career, the result of a creative process that she herself defines as a “liberation” . A multidisciplinary stage proposal that moves away from conventional narratives, introducing the viewer into a poetic experience that explores fleetingness, death and memory.
